The best time of year to apply top dressing is in the fall for colder regions and in the spring for the warmer regions. You want to prep your lawn before you put the top dressing down. Here are a few tips to getting your lawn ready.
• De- Thatch your lawn. Getting rid of the thatch is essential for the new material to get to the soil.
• U need to do some lawn mowing,close, without stressing the lawn.
• Remove all grass clippings and debris from the lawn.
• Core aerate and remove the cores if you have poor soil. You can leave them if you have good soil or after you have done this for a few years.
Now let’s make the top dressing lawn mixture. You may need to adjust your mixture to apply to your type of soil.For most area’s you will use 3 parts loam, 3 parts sand and 1 part peat. Make sure the peat is good quality and not just compost from yard waste as this may have weed seeds in it.
For heavy clay soil, increase the sand and decrease the loam.
For sandy soils just decrease the sand.
Make sure the mixture is fine. Use a sieve with 1/4″ holes to ensure the mixture gets to the existing soil.
Spread evenly with a shovel and rake even while pushing it through the grass to the soil. Make sure no top dressing is left on the top of the grass or it will kill the grass.
