Preparing Home Lawns: Get Your Home Lawns Ready For a Summer of Fun!

Ready For a Summer of Fun?  With the right preparation your Home Lawns will turn into the perfect lawn. Spending some time in the fall on your lawn maintenance will set you up for a summer of fun instead of a summer of frustration. What do you need to do to make this happen? Throwing money and time at your lawn does not get you a nicer lawn. Sometimes it’s doing the little things and letting nature work for you that makes all the difference.

Some people think that they need to constantly add stuff to their lawn to make the perfect lawn. Let’s take a different approach and see what happens.

For new lawns, it’s all in the soil preparation that gets you off to the right start. But for those with an established lawn, doing the small things will pay off bigger. For the colder regions September is the month to get it done.

Don’t over fertilize, this can cause thick  thatch and disease that you will need to deal with later. Fertilizing 2 to 3 times a
year is all you need. One in the spring, one in the early fall and one before the winter freeze if needed.

Do a soil test and make adjustments if needed. Your soil pH should be in the range of 6.0 to 7.5 for most grass types. You can
check with your local lawn and garden center to find out about the proper chemistry of your soil in your area.

Pay attention to the thatch build up and remove if needed. Overseed your lawn with a good quality grass seed. Manufactures are coming out with better and better seed with lower content of weed seed for better weed control. Water your lawn as needed. Most grass type s can deal with the summer heat if it is in good condition, so watering during the hot summer draught times may be kept to a minimum. You will need to water more after you have overseeded until full germination. It’s best to put sprinklers on a timer so
that you don’t over water or forget to turn it off.

Keep your lawn mower blades sharp all season long. You should sharpen your blades in the spring and then again around the 4th of July. Make sure not to cut your grass too short or to cut too much at one time.

During the heat of the summer you should keep your lawn a bit longer so that you don’t burn it out. When you are faced with
high grass, don’t try mowing  it all at one time. Cut at a high setting and then cut it again in a day or two at a lower setting.
Cutting too much at one time will damage the lawn.

By spending more time enjoying home lawns and less fussing over it, before you know it you have the perfect lawn.
