De- Thatch Lawn: Myth or a Must, Is A Thatch Lawn A Problem?
Do you need to Thatch Your Lawn to have a Happy Lawn? Well let’s start with explaining what thatch is.
Thatch is a layer of organic matter that occurs between the grass and the soil surface. More than a 1/2 inch of this matter is excessive and a breeding ground for disease and pests. This also make it hard for the grass roots to get the nutrients they need to grow.
So if you’re looking for that thick carpet like feel under your feet… then you need to get on your hands and knees, part the grass and look for that built up matter. If you have more than the 1/2 inch then it’s no myth, you must get rid of it. So let’s get to it.
Step-1 – Start with a stiff garden rake or a de-thatching rake. This is not easy and you will work up a sweat!
Step-2 – Make sure you can see the soil after the raking and de-thatching. If you can’t then you will need to do more. If the ground is dry ,water the lawn the day before de-thatching.
Step-3 – To get to the next step you can rent a good power de-thatcher, but make sure to learn the proper way to use it.
Step-4 – Start the de-thatching in the far corner of the lawn so that you can learn how it works before getting to the area’s everyone sees.
Step-5 – Keep track of your de-thatching, you should only run the machine over each swath once and try not to scrape the soil surface.
Step-6 – It’s time to clean up your mess with a leaf rake. Keep in mind that the lawn will look a little shabby for a bit, but in a few weeks you will be glad you put in the effort.
