Make your lawn an Easy Lawn to care for. Do you dread the thought of cutting your lawn?… That may be due to poor lawn layout. Putting in a garden bed with lots of curves and corners may look nice, but you will pay the first time you have to ” mow my lawn“. Sometimes when people make a nice landscaped yard they forget that the mower needs to get into these small areas.
When you plan a garden or any hardscape around the house think about the lawn that mowing that will need to be done. Plan out your project before you start. Knowing what to plan for is the biggest battle.When you’re in the planning phase of your project think about the whole project, before, during, and after. The prep, build and clean up. Planning for a happy lawn will point you in the right direction.
1) Start by having an idea of what you want to do and how you want it to look.
2) Take your mower and mow the outline of your garden bed, block wall or patio. This will ensure that you are not making extra work for yourself later when your caring for your lawn and need to mow.
3) Mark the mower line with paint so that as the grass grows you don’t lose your lines and plan.
4) When you are digging out for either a garden or hardscaping be sure to think about where you are going to put the extra dirt until you will need it.
a) If you will only have excess dirt for a day or two then put it on a tarp next to where you are working. This makes the clean up easy.
b) If it will be longer, don’t kill your grass with the tarp. Either put the excess dirt in another garden bed or take it away in a wheel barrow.
5) When putting in a landscape wall next to the lawn you should think about what it will look like in a few months. Putting a row of bricks in front of the wall for the mower wheel to ride on will help with weed control in front of the wall.
So, an easy lawn starts with a well thought out plan. Have fun, be creative but don’t make it more work later.
