All Lawns Beware: See What Can Ruin All Lawns In A Flash!
All lawns should be easy to care for so that it’s not a chore that is put off every week. With an easy lawn to take care of, it becomes fun to keep it in good shape and looking nice.
Lawn drainage is a concern and should be dealt with. If your lawn does not drain after a rain storm or if it drains to fast after a rain fall you have a problem. After a good rain fall (let’s say a day of steady rain) you want to walk around your lawn and see what you have waiting for you.
No lawn drains perfectly and you will always find some small puddles but it is the big areas of water that you are looking for.
Pooling water is caused by either poor grading or poor soil consistency. Wet lawns have a negative affect on the health of your lawn. When your lawn is damp or wet for long periods of time it becomes susceptible to diseases. Likewise if your lawn drains to fast it will dry out and get brown or die.
Sandy soil drains fast and clay soil does not so what do you do? Adding organic matter to the soil adds nutrients that the sandy soil needs and loosens clay soil so it will drain. Adding organic matter is as simple as spreading compost, manure or peat to your lawn.
When you have pooling water due to poor grading then you have a different problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that water should run away from the house. So the grading needs to be pitched from the house foundation out. Water can and will do damage to a house foundation, so you need to keep it away.
You could also have low spots in the lawn that will hold water. You can fill in the low spot and feather it out so that it becomes even with the rest of the lawn. Be careful not to cause a water dam or interrupt a water way.
Water needs to flow so you should never remove a water swale in the yard that carries the water away.
All Lawns should also be ready for family fun or entertaining your friends and neighbors at any time during the nice weather, so get the water under control and be ahead of the game. Because with a little hard work to begin with lawn care should be easy.
